Lady Tigers roar back into playoff contention

The Wills Point Lady Tigers entered last week in desperate need of wins to keep their playoff chances alive, entering play against Brownsboro at the bottom of the District 13-4A standings after an 0-4 start to district play.

Down but not out, Wills Point responded by playing its best match of the district slate against Brownsboro Oct. 6, dominating all three sets en route to a 25-18, 25-20, 25-12 win over the Bearettes.

The Lady Tigers finished the match with 34 total kills as a team, nearly double the total of Brownsboro's combined output (18).

Claire Hiler led all players with 14 kills overall, followed by Olivia McMath with seven, Melanie Sullivan with four, Maddie Booth and Kalyn Dryman with three each, Hope Turner with two and Dawn Smith with one.

Hope Turner finished as Wills Point's top server with four aces overall, followed by Melanie Sullivan and Kalyn Dryman with two each, and Claire Hiler and Maddie Booth with one apiece.

Jeslyn Martinez paced all players with 19 digs overall in the match, with Hope Turner adding 16 and Maddie Booth 11.

Hope Turner and Olivia McMath combined to finish play with 32 of Wills Point's 34 assists against the Bearettes.

Wills Point continued the positive momentum built in the win over Brownsboro Oct. 10, rallying back from an early deficit to record a four-set win over a Mabank Lady Panther team that entered the match with a 3-2 record overall during the first round of District 13-4A play.

Despite a fast start in the first set, the Lady Panthers fought back to edge Wills Point 25-23.

The Lady Tigers responded to Mabank's challenge by upping their game both offensively and defensively, taking the second set 25-22 to even the match.

Wills Point continued to improve their play throughout the rest of the night, reasserting control in the third set by outscoring Mabank 25-15 before closing out play by taking the fourth set 25-20.

Match stats from Wills Point contest against Mabank were not immediately available as of press time.

Through six games of District 6-4A play district play, the Rains Lady Cats are currently in first place with a 5-1 record, followed by Van, Canton and Mabank in a three-way tie for second at 3-3, and Wills Point and Brownsboro tied for fifth at 2-4. The top four finishers in District 13-4A will advance to compete in this year’s UIL 4A State Volleyball Playoffs.

Wills Point was scheduled to host Canton Oct. 13 before tangling with the Van Lady Vandals on Senior Night Oct. 17. The Lady Tiges will end district play with back-to-back road dates, traveling to Emory Rains Oct. 20 and Brownsboro Oct. 24.
