If the first two matches of District 12-3A play for the Edgewood Lady Dogs are any indication, the race for a top four finish and a spot in this year's UIL State Volleyball Playoffs will likely go down to the wire.

Edgewood began district play with a pair of thrillers last week, taking on perennial playoff qualifiers Alba-Golden and Quitman in consecutive matches. Edgewood finished the first week of district play going 1-1 overall, recording a five-set win over the Lady Panthers followed by a five-set loss to Quitman.

The Lady Dogs traveled to Alba Sept. 8, picking up a 25-15, 22-25, 25-22, 17-25, 16-14 win over the Lady Panthers.

Edgewood players totaled 44 assists on the night, including 22 by Libby Martin, 17 by Tabitha Parker, three by Keeley Randle and two by Nicole Neal.

Three Edgewood players finished with double-digits in kills, including sophomore Kenzie Smith with 16, senior Nicole Neal with 15 and Tabitha Parker with 13.

Tabitha Parker helped to pace the Lady Dogs in digs with 19, followed by Kate Farnsworth and Nicole Neal with 18 each, Libby Martin and Kenzie Smith with 14 each and Mady Bachtel with 10 each.

Kenzie Smith finished with a team-high eight blocks, followed by Katy Pool with six, and Tabitha Parker and Nicole Neal with five each.

Edgewood returned to the court Sept. 12, taking on Quitman in a battle of the Lady Dogs. Quitman got the better of Edgewood in the contest, rallying for a two sets to one deficit to record a 25-16, 24-26, 23-25, 25-13, 15-9 win.

Stats for the match between Edgewood and Quitman were not immediately available as of press time.

Edgewood was scheduled to host Scurry-Rosser Sept. 15 and Mineola Sept. 19. The Lady Dogs, who have already recorded wins over Canton, Fruitvale, Van and Wills Point this season, will have the opportunity to make it a clean sweep of Van Zandt County based teams when they travel to Grand Saline Sept. 22.
