County football begin two-a-days

Van Zandt County football teams got back to the grind this week, opening up two-a-day workouts Aug. 7 in preparation for the upcoming season. County teams will face a tough task to beat their accomplishments from 2016 when three teams, Edgewood, Van and Wills Point each won at least a share of their respective district titles.

The Vandals put together the most dominant performance of any county team, reaching the Class 4A, Region I championship game during their Cinderella season.

The Canton Eagles, 7-4 overall in 2016 with a bi-district round playoff appearance, won each of their first four non-district games last season against Brownsboro, Grace Community, Mabank and Waxahachie Life.

After a midseason stumble against Paris North Lamar in the non-district finale, the Eagles finished District 8-4A play going 3-2 with wins over Emory Rains, Ferris and Dallas Roosevelt, and losses to both Wills Point and Dallas Lincoln before bowing out of the playoffs with a loss to Aubrey in the bi-district round.
