EXEL Lions take down defending state champs

On Aug. 29, the EXEL Lions faced off against the Tyler Heat. The Lions, a newly formed homeschool team in their first season, are a Division 2 team (15 players or less).

The Heat, the defending state champions of the TAIAO (Texas Association of Independent Athletic Organization) league are a Division 1 team (16 or more players) looking to defend their title.

Although a newly formed team, the Lions surprised the Heat with a 33-30 victory. For the EXEL Lions offense, La’Rondrick Cox had 13 carries for 119 yards and 3 touchdowns. Ronnie Cox had 15 carries for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns.

On the passing front James Lawrence threw 8 completions for 93 yards. On the receiving end Tanner Walker had 1 reception for 36 yards, and Travis Abel had 2 receptions for 61 yards.

Altogether the Lions made 351 offensive yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Tanner Walker had 2 interceptions and Trey Harris had 1 interception.

First contest winner of 2015 to be announced in next week’s issue

The winner of Football Contest No. 1 will be announced in next week’s (September 6) issue of the Van Zandt News.

To enter Football Contest No. 2, pick up an official entry form located in this issue and circle the team you pick to win in the game listed on each ad in the contest pages.

The person selecting the most correct games for that week will be the winner.

Winners each week will receive $50.00 worth of coupons redeemable at the participating merchants’ stores or payable on bank loans only with participating banks.

The coupons cannot be exchanged for cash or deposited as cash.

Entries must be in the Van Zandt News office before 4:30 p.m. Thursday preceding the games.

County teams open 2015 seasons

Friday night lights started shining all over Texas this week with the start of the 2015 football season officially arriving with kickoff weekend. Canton was scheduled to be one of the first teams to get underway with an Aug. 27 kick at the Azalea Classic in Tyler.

Edgewood, Fruitvale, Van and Wills Point were all on tap to start their seasons on Aug. 28, and Fruitvale, which made the drop from 11-man down to outlaw six-man football beginning on Aug. 29.

Canton

For the second consecutive season, the Canton Eagles and Grace Community Cougars were scheduled to kick off their respective seasons at the Azalea Classic at Mewbourne Field on Aug. 27.

In their 2014 matchup, Canton fell into an early 21-14 deficit before finding its footing and delivering a 49-28 runaway win.

Eaglettes capture second at Eustace Tournament

The Canton Eaglettes continued what has already been a strong start to their 2015 season, competing in the annual Bulldog Varsity Volleyball Tournament over the weekend and returning home with a second place finish in the Championship Bracket.

Pool play began on day one of the tournament, with 32 teams jockeying for one of eight available spots in the Championship Bracket. Thanks to an undefeated stretch in those matches, including wins over both Malakoff and Kemp, the Eaglettes qualified to compete in the Championship Bracket alongside Eustace, Elysian Fields, Mildred, Ennis, Mabank, Elkhart and Sunnyvale.

In round one of the bracket on Aug. 22, Canton outplayed Mildred to set up a semifinal round showdown with Elysian Fields.

Canton controlled the match from the opening serve, cruising to an easy two set win, 25-13, 25-23, over the Yellowjackets.

Mixed results greet Van Zandt County teams

The opening Thursday and Friday nights of the 2015 season brought mixed results for Van Zandt County football teams, with two out of five teams in action, Edgewood and Van, picking up wins.

On the other end of the spectrum, Canton, which played on Thursday night, Wills Point and Grand Saline all started their seasons with double-digit losses.

For the second consecutive season, the Canton Eagles opened their season in a rare Thursday night tilt against the Grace Community Cougars in the Azalea Classic played on the campus of Tyler All Saints. After a slow start, Canton eventually slugged its way into the lead in the game only to fall victim to two late Cougar touchdowns in a 31-21 loss.

Exel looking for athletes

Exel Athletic Association was formed in late spring, early summer to help meet the needs of athletes in Van Zandt, Smith and surrounding counties for homeschool, chartered and private school families. They currently have a 6-man football team, and will play baseball for the second year in the spring.

There are currently 10 players on the football team, with spots for a few more players. You are eligible if you are home schooled or if you attend a charter or private school that does not offer athletics. For further information contact Marty at exellionsfootball@gmail.com.

Local members of the Exel Lions include home schoolers, Travis Abel of Wills Point, Keegan Yingling of Wills Point and Matthew "Rabbit" Caughron of Edgewood. Regular season games were scheduled to begin on Aug. 29 in Tyler.

“The Locker Room Show” returns Monday, August 24 on KMOO

KMOO (99.9 FM) in Mineola will once again be broadcasting “The Locker Room Show” as part of its high school football coverage beginning Monday, August 24.

The show, which airs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. every Monday night during the high school football season, originates from a local restaurant in the KMOO listening area. The season premiere of “The Locker Room Show” Monday, August 24 will take place at Wing Dingers in Mineola.

The program features recaps of the previous week’s high school football action in East Texas and looks ahead to the upcoming week’s matchups. Interviews with players and coaches from the town that the show is originating from that week are also featured.

David Barber, sports correspondent for Van Zandt Newspapers L. L. C., joins KMOO sports director and play-by-play broadcaster Clayton Neville and KMOO color commentator Larry Smith as hosts of the “The Locker Room Show.”

Pre-season winding down for county teams

Van Zandt County football teams moved one step closer to the start of their 2015 non-district calendars this week, with most teams wrapping up their first of two scheduled scrimmages on Aug. 14-15.

Additionally, Fruitvale ISD announced this week that they would not be participating in UIL 11-man football during the upcoming season due to a numbers crunch, opting instead to return to their “outlaw” days by scheduling six-man football opponents.

Scrimmages are scheduled to include:

-The Canton Eagles were scheduled to host Mt. Vernon on Aug. 15 before making the short trip to Edgewood to compete against the Bulldogs in a scrimmage on Aug. 20.

-The Edgewood Bulldogs were scheduled to travel north on Aug. 14 to scrimmage the Quinlan Ford Panthers. Edgewood returns home next week, hosting the 4A Canton Eagles in their final scrimmage on Aug. 20.

Grand Saline Lady hosted playday
