Martins Mill downs Lady Flyers, 60-39

Tuesday night's matchup between the Martins Mill Lady Mustangs and LaPoynor Lady Flyers had all the makings of a heavyweight battle, featuring perennial state title contenders ranked second and fifth overall in the state among 2A programs.

Led by their always raucous home crowd and stellar defensive play throughout the night, Martins Mill turned the contest into an early knockout by building up a 12-point halftime lead en route to a 60-39 runaway victory.

The first quarter between Martins Mill and LaPoynor would be the most competitive of the night as the Lady Flyers hung tough to trail by just 12-10 after eight minutes of play. The Lady Mustangs had four players score at least two points in the opening frame, including Abbie Orrick with four points, Briley Moon and Taylor Sparks with three each and Calli Camacho with two.

Martins Mill would begin to flex its defensive muscle in the second quarter, limiting the Lady Flyers to just six points overall to take a 28-16 lead into halftime.

Calli Camacho and Mollie Daniel helped to propel the Lady Mustang's offense in the frame, combining for 11 points in the quarter.

The pace of play slowed considerably for both teams in the third quarter as each offense struggled to find its range from the field. Despite the step back in pace, Martins Mill still outplayed the Lady Flyers to extend their advantage to 36-21 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Mustangs closed play by putting together their best offensive quarter of the night, getting seven points from Mollie Daniel, six points from Taylor Sparks and five points from Briley Moon to pull away for the 21-point win.
