GS Library debuts 3D Printer

Since we got our 3D printer, we have tried to have something printing during library hours so that everyone can see the printer in action.  From young to old, the looks of amazement as they learn what this machine is and what it can do has reminded us of how important it is for the library to provide education and innovation to the community.

Many people ask about what can be made with a 3D printer, but the question should really be what can’t be made with a 3D printer.  They are being used in ways that most people don’t realize.  The technology is used in the medical field, for clothing design such as shoes, electronics, jewelry making and so much more.

One of the more common uses for 3D printing is making prosthetics, but the medical field also uses it to create, model and practice techniques before procedures.

Printing in 3D is a wonderful tool to use to create parts.  If you are missing a certain nut or bolt, or need to replace something on a piece of equipment, 3D printing can help. It allows artists, creators and makers to rapidly take ideas from concepts to an actual product.

Later this winter we will be offering workshops on how to use and create with 3D printers.  Until then, feel free to stop by the library and see some of our creations.  We even have bookmarks for sale, so you can take a piece of 3D printing home with you.

We would like to thank the Institute of Library and Museum Science, Texas State Libraries and Archives Commission, and Connecting Texas Libraries Statewide for making our 3D printing dream possible.

Just a reminder, library cards are available for those who can provide proof of residence in Van Zandt County or surrounding communities and/or photo identification.  A guardian must sign for children ages 7-17.  Regular business hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Friday.  Call 903-962-5516 for more information or visit our website at www.grandsalinelibrary.com.
