Martha Elizabeth Byars Hull Wetherholt


Martha Elizabeth Byars Hull Wetherholt was born June 24, 1945, in Nashville, Tenn. to Dr. Perry J.C. Byars Jr. and Margaret Elsie Dobbins Byars.

She was raised in San Angelo and graduated in 1963 from San Angelo Central High School. She attended Trinity University in San Antonio, Angelo State Community College in San Angelo, and graduated from San Bernardino Valley College of Nursing in 1968 with Registered Nurse Licensures in California, Texas, South Carolina and Florida.

She married John W. Hull Jr. in 1964, and they had a son, John W. Hull III. They divorced in 1979. She married her beloved husband, Charles Victor Wetherholt in 1982, and they moved to Canton near Martins Mill and Walnut Springs community.

She not only practiced nursing, but was involved in church activities and civic organizations. She enjoyed teaching youth and adult Sunday School classes and was active in various ministries and served on church committees. She was a charter member of Grace Bible Baptist Fellowship Church.

As a member of Canton Lions Club, she promoted the Texas Lions Camp through the Century Club program. She was active in bringing tourism growth to Van Zandt County and organized a countywide group to promote tourism. She was also involved in bringing educational opportunities to residents to build a workforce base.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Dale Everett Byars; grandparents, William L. Talveich and Martha Alberta Dobbins Talevich, and the Rev. Julius Caesar Byars and Zora Elizabeth Talley Byars; and a close cousin, Elizabeth Ann Bryant Moody.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Victor Wetherholt; son, John W. Hull III of Canton; brother, Alan Edward Byars and wife, Barbara Ann Master Byars of Midland; sisters-in-law, Cynthia Lynn Cox Byars of Richardson and Gay Lynn Hampton Pirie of Dallas; nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and cousins, Kenneth Edward Smith of Fredericksburg; Bill Dobbins of Pine Bluff, Ark.; Robert and Pam Allison Bryant and Cecil Moody, all of New Braunfels; Robert and Nelda Harrell of Paris; Deborah L. Byars and Mark Byars, cousins; step-children, Jack and Cindy Wetherholt; Bill and Diana Wetherholt; Amy Louise Wetherholt Ryer Gentry and Sam Gentry, Lynda Mae Wetherholt; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hope Pregnancy Center, Friends of the Library, Van Zandt County Genealogical Society, FUMC Crawford House, South Van Zandt Fire Dept., Texas Lions Camp, Kerrville.
