The Van Zandt County Precinct Watch Program recently received honorable mention recognition in three categories from the Texas Crime Prevention Association in three categories.

The crime prevention group held its summer training conference in San Antonio last month.

The association, established “to encourage the prevention of crime through coordinated and concentrated efforts, and though programs and functions that encourage citizen involvement and participation, to preserve safe environments and communities for the citizens of Texas,” celebrated its 40th anniversary at the event.

According to information from TCPA, each year the group presents awards “to individuals and agencies that exhibit outstanding efforts in crime prevention.”  This year the Van Zandt County Precinct Watch Program was cited as honorable mentions in three areas: Outstanding Crime Prevention Agency – small agency up to 99,999; Outstanding Crime Prevention Manager – Sheriff Lindsey Ray, program manager; and Outstanding Citizen Crime Prevention Award – Buster Leavell, program coordinator.

In the small agency category, the Deer Park Police Department took the top award.

Van Zandt County’s Precinct Watch Program has grown to about 300 members. As part of its efforts, citizens involved with the watch patrol sectors of the county.
