Chief Mike Echols

Canton Police Chief Mike Echols has announce his retirement effective Aug. 31.

Echols has been with Canton PD since 1987. He has been chief since October 2007.

A reception honoring Echols time with the city will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Canton Senior Citizens, 200 W. Groves St.

Canton City Manager Lonny Cluck said a new police chief should be named in the next few weeks.

“I believe in promoting internally if you have good candidates,” he said. “We posted the job internally and had two good applicants – very qualified candidates.”

A five-person panel interviewed both candidates and made a recommendation, Cluck said.
